Reading for Week 4

Research: Overview from OWL was going to be really helpful for my semester project. Because it gave me not only an idea about where do I begin to research but also some suggestions of sources that I can consider to look up when I have hard time to find elsewhere. One of the big troubles that I had for my research is I don't know where to start my research. Even though I know what I am looking for and What I need, I wasted my time wandering around the Internet because I don't know where to begin with. Furthermore, it seems to me this website will be helpful for me because the three questions which is what kind of information that I looking for, where to look, and how much information I need are key questions that I usually struggle with. so, I think I can apply this three questions and type of available sources to my resources that support my research.

Proposal Questions/Comments

The most impressive comment about my topic was Question #4 from Mika's group. For my Methodology, I've already thought about look up Newspapers, however, I didn't thought about interviewing professors who may know about these international issues. Also, Sharon's group comment about professors as a audience was a good idea of audiences that I could possible has.
Finally, Natasa's group gives me good idea of mentioning programs by ask questions about it.

In class group work #2

For my 250 words topic, I need to know how to include in-text citation and references for APA style. Sharon shows me how to make in-text citation which is include author's last name and year. Also, I was able to know about how to reference if there is no author but organization. So now, I know how to make proper in-text citation and reference for APA style.

250 words topic

Global vs. Poverty

In the 20th century, our world became very modernize in terms of mass production, market, science and technology. However, like a light can’t exist without shadow, there are many international issues of this highly modernized world. Global poverty is one of that issues indicate the dark side of the world. According to United Nations Development Program, 40 percent of the world population earned 5 percent of global income however, 20 percent of richest population earned three-quarter of it.
Also, poverty issues are closely related to other world issues. For instance, lack of food and nutrition leads to diseases and child mortality. Ultimately, this whole issues are point to human right issues how people be treated as human. Many world organizations like United Nations and Red Cross confront with this serious issue around the world. United Nations have many programs that focusing on reduce poverty around the world. For example, UNICEF helped many poor countries children by send aid to those countries. However, lack of sufficient fund and donor countries self-interest disturb these activities.
United Nations is the organization that deals with this issue fairly easy. The reason is that they have most efficient organization body structure around the world. For example, getting funds for certain program and obtaining route for helping developing nations are far more easily than other non-profit organization because U.N. is trustworthy governmental organization.
Despite of these efforts that United Nations put on to this issue, the world doesn’t look different than few years from now. There are three major obstacles that United Nations has: lack of funds, donor countries self-interest, and corruption.

In class group work

Today, I worked with Peggy and Delisa. They are also have a hard time to write research questions and thesis. Peggy pointed out my research questions need to be one question instead of three similar questions. Delisa gives me a ideas what would be my revised research question.

Revised research question: What efforts did United Nations put on to prevent global poverty and what is limitation of their efforts?

Revised thesis statement: United Nations have many programs that focusing on reduce poverty around the world. For example, UNICEF helped many poor countries children by send aid to those countries. However, lack of sufficient fund and donor countries self-interest disturb this activities.

The one thing that I figured out was I need more preliminary search about this topic.

United Nations poverty issues

  • Working research question: What is programs, plans or activities that United Nations do for preventing global poverty? What is limitations that United Nations faced on by prevent the world poverty?(Why is it so hard to prevent global poverty?)
  • Working thesis statement: An analysis of United Nations program of preventing global poverty: Why is it global issue? What are their plan? How's that reactions help to reduce poverty? What is limitation of that program?
  • Purpose: to explan & analyze United Nations actions toward one of the global issue: Poverty around the world.
  • Audience: Students & scholars who interested in global issues especially global poverty, U.N. employees who working on that global poverty issues.

Shah, A. (2009). Poverty Facts and Stats. Global Issues. para 21. Retrived from http://www.globalissues.org/article/26/poverty-facts-and-stats

Dugger, C. W. (2005). U.N. vs. Poverty: Seeking a Focus, Quarreling Over the Vision. The New York Times. Retrived from http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/14/international/14poverty.html?_r=2&scp=3&sq=United%20Nations%20International%20issues%20poverty&st=cse

Basically, I have two similiar sources that share similiar topic but use different way to express that topic. Anup Shah, the author of Poverty Facts and Stats, has little unreliable authority toward this topic. He describe himself that has computer science degree very passionate about this issues enough to create this website and articles. However, because he awared that he doesn't have enough authority toward this issues. He pay attention to improved others like accuracy, objectivity and currency. On the other hand, Celia W. Dugger's article have trustworthy authority because it's news analysis of New York Times. However, I could totally depend on this article because it could be little opinionated.

Preliminary Google Search

Keyword: United Nations

Using Keyword 'United Nations,' I found the websites of United Nations http://www.un.org/en/aboutun/index.shtml , the websites programs and Specialized Agencies that related to United Nations http://www.unep.org/ http://www.unodc.org/and brief overview information of United Nations in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations.
The keyword itself was somewhat helpful because I kind of get the general ideas of what is United Nations. However 74,400,000 results for this keyword and I think more than 90% of this results are not what I need for my research. Furthermore, in google scholar, this keyword brought up some random report or yearbook about UN. So, I really need to narrow it down!

Refine Keyword: United Nations History

Because I'm curious about history of United Nations I used the search within results and put keyword 'history' on there. Although it didn't really narrow it down to my expectation however I was able to find some good articles and web posts about United Nations history and history of peacekeeping forces
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1988/un-history.html
http://www.adl.org/international/Israel-UN-1-introduction.asp
http://www.unaoc.org/repository/6865Civilization%20-%20Truth%20or%20Tool%20-%20R.%20Bulliet.pdf
Even though, I found some good resources on this keyword it was still too much results and unnecessary results for my research. So, does it helpful? I should say no because there is no big differents between results that before refined keyword.

Refine Keyword: United Nations History International issues Peacekeeping Forces

Since I figured that putting only one keyword for refine doesn't get narrow down to the point that I want to, I put two keywords for refine the 'United Nations' the 'International issues' and 'peacekeeping forces.' Most of the information that I found was either articles or journals about Peacekeeping forces or International issues that United Nations dealing with.
http://homepage.univie.ac.at/Vedran.Dzihic/Kagan.pdf
http://books.sipri.org/files/books/SIPRI02Findlay.pdf
http://www.mofa.go.jp/POLICY/un/pko/issues.html
http://italy.usembassy.gov/pdf/other/IB90103.pdf
http://www.sam.gov.tr/perceptions/Volume4/December1999-February2000/cavusoglu.PDF
http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/dpko/
I can confidentially say that Keywords are really helpful this time. It was still 167,000 results which was a lot however it narrowed down to the point that I can found useful informations. The only bad thing about this research is I was ended up with so many things to read. I am still mot used to read in english so this much reading will take me a semester to finish it.

Keyword

Summary

From the Keyword article, I learned that keyword is specific word which was able to represent the information that I'm looking for through online, library or both.
Also, I realize that refining a search is not a ridiculously hard thing to do. It is just narrow it down by using or adding other keyword to search engine!
Furthermore, i was little surprised about free text searches because I didn't know about it.
Honestly, I was expected advanced researching method when this homework assigned to me however I'm so glad it wasn't like that at all.
